Earth FX International Zambia’s wildlife volunteering program will give people from Zambia and around the world the opportunity to contribute to meaningful conservation work while learning alongside the people working to protect wildlife and strengthen conservation for the future.

Beginning in 2027, volunteers will have opportunities to support animal welfare, conservation education, environmental projects, site restoration and the continuing development of Earth FX Zambia’s conservation initiatives.

This is not about arriving with all the answers.

With Earth FX Zambia, volunteering is about participating in the everyday work that supports wildlife, people and the places they share.

Depending on the stage of our projects, your skills and local priorities, this may mean contributing to wildlife facility improvements, habitat and grounds work, conservation education, research support, maintenance, visitor experiences, community initiatives or practical projects that help strengthen conservation capacity.

Every day in conservation is different.

Earth FX Zambia is being developed as a long-term conservation initiative, and volunteer opportunities will evolve as projects, facilities and partnerships grow.

Rather than offering a fixed list of activities simply to fill a volunteer itinerary, placements will be shaped around genuine project needs, appropriate skills, safety requirements and the priorities of our Zambian team and partners.

Supporting appropriate wildlife care activities, habitat improvement, enrichment preparation and conservation projects.

Assisting with approved observations, data collection, field activities and conservation research where appropriate.

Helping prepare resources, support learning activities and contribute to Kids for Conservation initiatives.

Supporting projects that recognise the relationship between wildlife conservation, communities and sustainable futures.

Painting, landscaping, repairs, construction support, maintenance and practical improvement projects.

Veterinary, zoological, education, trades, engineering, sustainability, tourism, communications and other professional expertise may contribute to specific projects.

You don’t need to be a wildlife expert to make a meaningful contribution.

Earth FX Zambia welcomes people from different backgrounds, professions, ages and stages of life who share a willingness to learn, contribute and work respectfully alongside others.

Some volunteers may bring years of professional experience. Others may bring practical skills, creativity, enthusiasm or simply the willingness to roll up their sleeves and help.

What matters most is not what is written on your résumé.

Contribute your time, energy and willingness to practical conservation projects.

Bring specialist experience in areas such as wildlife, veterinary science, education, trades, construction, engineering, sustainability, tourism, communications or research.

Schools, universities, workplaces and organised groups may be able to participate in structured conservation projects.

Volunteering in Zambia may be rewarding, challenging, dusty, hot, unpredictable and occasionally well outside your comfort zone.

Your experience will depend on the projects underway, the needs of the Earth FX Zambia team, your skills and interests, the length of your stay and any relevant safety or professional requirements.

The practical side of making a difference.

Volunteering internationally is about more than the work itself. Where you stay, how you get around, what you eat and how supported you feel all contribute to the experience.

The Earth FX Zambia Volunteer Program is being developed to provide volunteers with a safe, welcoming and practical base while they contribute to conservation projects in Zambia.

Because facilities will develop alongside the wider Earth FX Zambia program, accommodation arrangements may vary depending on the timing and location of each placement.

During the initial stages of the program, volunteers may be accommodated at approved facilities close to the project site, with dedicated Earth FX volunteer accommodation planned as the program develops.

Future volunteer facilities are intended to provide comfortable, practical shared accommodation with bathroom and laundry facilities and spaces where volunteers can relax together after the day’s work.

Meals will be arranged as part of the volunteer experience, with communal dining providing an opportunity to eat, talk and connect with other volunteers and team members.

Future dedicated facilities are planned to include a dining and lounge area, basic kitchen amenities for tea, coffee and simple personal use, and outdoor areas for relaxing.

Where volunteers are staying off-site, daily transport to and from the project location will be coordinated as part of the placement arrangements.

Transport associated with organised Earth FX volunteer activities will be clearly explained before arrival.

Expect Zambia to be part of the experience — not simply the backdrop to it.

Days may be hot, dusty, physical, surprising and occasionally unpredictable. There will also be opportunities to slow down, meet people, experience a different culture and discover a country with extraordinary wildlife and landscapes.

That may include wildlife welfare, conservation education, habitat and facility improvements, project development and the long-term capacity needed to continue conservation work after volunteers return home.

Earth FX Zambia volunteer placements are being designed around meaningful participation rather than short-term conservation tourism.

Placement lengths will vary depending on the project, the type of work involved and the volunteer’s experience. Some opportunities may suit a shorter placement, while specialist, research or project-based roles may benefit from a longer commitment.

Ideal for volunteers with limited time who still want to make a genuine contribution.

Your program fee is not simply the cost of a place to stay.

It helps cover the real costs associated with hosting and supporting international volunteers while contributing to the conservation work they have travelled to be part of.

As the program develops, volunteer income will help support areas such as wildlife welfare, conservation education, project materials, local employment, facility improvements and the continued development of Earth FX Zambia’s conservation initiatives.

YOUR PLACEMENT HELPS FUND THE WORK YOU CAME TO SUPPORT.

Volunteering with Earth FX Zambia means entering another country, culture and conservation environment as a guest and a participant.

We want volunteers to arrive informed, prepared and ready to contribute safely and respectfully.

International volunteer placements will generally be designed for adults aged 18 years and over.

Opportunities for school, university, family or supervised youth groups may be developed separately with appropriate safeguarding and supervision requirements.

Appropriate comprehensive travel and medical insurance will be required for international volunteers.

Volunteers should ensure their policy is suitable for Zambia and covers the activities included in their confirmed placement.

Activities may involve heat, uneven ground, dust, outdoor conditions and varying levels of physical work.

Volunteers should consider their own health, mobility and capacity when applying and advise Earth FX of anything relevant to safe participation in their placement.

Health and vaccination requirements vary according to the traveller, itinerary and current guidance.

Volunteers should seek appropriate professional travel-health advice well before departure rather than relying on general information provided by the volunteer program.

Volunteers are responsible for ensuring they meet the passport, visa and entry requirements applicable to their nationality and intended activities in Zambia.

Earth FX Zambia will provide relevant placement information where required but cannot guarantee entry or immigration approval.

All volunteers will be expected to follow Earth FX Zambia policies, safety procedures, cultural expectations and standards of professional and respectful conduct.

Placements involving children, vulnerable people, wildlife or other sensitive activities may require additional screening, permissions, qualifications or supervision.

Volunteering does not guarantee direct contact with wildlife.

Any involvement with animals will be determined by animal welfare, safety, legal requirements, staff direction and the needs of the individual animal — not by the expectations of the volunteer.

Some volunteers may never physically handle an animal.

And that is exactly as it should be.

The value of a conservation placement is not measured by how close you get to wildlife, but by what your presence contributes to its future.

Before travelling, every confirmed volunteer will receive a placement information pack containing the requirements relevant to their individual program.

Zambia is more than the place where your volunteer placement happens.

It is a country of extraordinary wildlife, landscapes, cultures and communities — and understanding the place is part of understanding conservation within it.

From the woodlands and wetlands surrounding Lusaka to some of Africa’s great rivers, national parks and wildlife landscapes, volunteers are encouraged to experience Zambia with curiosity, respect and an openness to learn.

CONSERVATION DOES NOT EXIST SEPARATELY FROM PEOPLE OR PLACE.

The communities, economies, cultures, wildlife and landscapes of Zambia are connected.

Spending time discovering the country can help volunteers better understand the realities and opportunities surrounding conservation — while responsible tourism also contributes to local businesses, employment and communities.

During free time or before and after their Earth FX placement, volunteers may choose to explore more of Zambia independently or through reputable tourism operators.

Depending on their itinerary, that might mean discovering:

National parks and wildlife areas • Victoria Falls • the Zambezi River • local markets and communities • cultural experiences • conservation projects • walking safaris • wildlife viewing • Zambia’s extraordinary landscapes

Optional travel and tourism experiences are separate from the core Earth FX volunteer placement unless specifically included in an individual program.
